All Quiet On The Western Front - Erich Maria Remarque 1st UK Edition 1929 20th impression September 1929 One of the most searing anti-war novels ever written—a stark, unflinching portrayal of World War I from the perspective of a young German soldier, Paul Bäumer. Author: Erich Maria Remarque, a German WWI veteran Published: January 29, 1929 (Germany); translated into English by Arthur Wesley Wheen the same year Setting: Western Front, 1916–1918 Disillusionment with war: The novel dismantles romantic notions of heroism, showing how war dehumanizes and isolates soldiers. Loss of youth and identity: Paul and his classmates, once idealistic, are reduced to survival machines, alienated from civilian life. Psychological trauma: Remarque captures the mental toll of trench warfare—shell shock, grief, and numbness. The book was banned and burned by the Nazi regime for being “unpatriotic,” yet it sold over 2.5 million copies in 22 languages within its first 18 months. It remains a cornerstone of veterans’ literature. Remarque, born Erich Paul Remark in 1898, served on the Western Front and was wounded. His later works—The Road Back, Three Comrades, Arch of Triumph—continued to explore themes of exile, trauma, and resistance. His sister Elfriede was executed by the Nazis in 1943 for anti-regime remarks—a tragedy that deeply marked his life. Trader very good about the price, my offer was accepted straight away so, I saved £10.
