Description

Sir Walter Scott: Tales of a Grandfather, Being Tales Taken from Scottish History, two volume set, printed for Wm Burgess Jr, New York, 1828. Second American Edition, complete in two volumes. Small 1/2 leather with paper covered boards. On the series from Wikipedia: Tales of a Grandfather is a series of books on the history of Scotland, written by Sir Walter Scott, who originally intended it for his grandson. The books were published between 1828 and 1830. In the 19th century, the study of Scottish history focused mainly on cultural traditions and therefore, in Scott’s books, while the timeline of events is accurate, many anecdotes are either folk stories or inventions. The books are in fair condition with substantial wear to boards and leather, former owner's name in both with one crossed out, chipping to frontis in volume two, heavy toning and foxing to endpapers, and some staining.
