Description

Antique Hand-colored Bird Print of Jean Emmanuel Marie Le Maout of France We offer several very colorful prints from painter Le Maout’s Historie Naturelle des Oiseau (Paris, 1853, second edition 1855), part of his Les Trois Regnes de la Nature. Especially colorful birds from many parts of the world were chosen by Le Maout, mostly painted from skins, I believe; many were hand-colored by William H. Freeman. These very handsome prints, ca. 6.5” wide x 10 3/8” tall, all feature lovely flowering plants and/or butterflies, with birds that are accurately depicted. All these are in excellent condition. Le Maout’s prints are little known and rare. Here labeled Moucherelle Rubin, the pink bird is sown with a yellow hibiscus. I feel confident it’s meant to represent Leptopoecile sophiae, White-browed Tit Warbler, of the mountains of central Asia, the white brow somehow missing. $110
