Description
First published in 1915 “This book tells about the simple, inexpensive ways of getting the pleasures and benefits of camping out and avoiding the serious discomforts and danger.” Across sixteen chapters Miller covers: Kinds of Camps, Tents’ Eliminating the Blanket, Getting Away from the Browse Bed, The Camp-Fire, Cook-Kits and Cook-Fires, The Chef on the Trail, Trail Accessories, In Emergency, Taking the Family Along, Western Camping, The Lone Jack Diamon Hitch Tents and Clothing, Getting on Your Feet, Camp Comforts, Camp Organizations and Build Yourself a Permanent Camp. With over forty black and white photographs, hitch illustrations and introduction by Ernest Thompson Seton, this rare antique book is a wonderful addition to the outdoor persons library (but it should be noted that some text and naming would not be in common use today). While outdoor gear has progressed to new high-tech standards this book is still considered one of the best “how to” camping books for the adventurer that takes the road less traveled. Warren Hastings Miller (1878 – 1960) offered much to this American life. A graduate of Stevens Institute of Technology in 1898 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering from 1900 to 1908 he worked for a variety of companies but then went to Paris to be a writer. His writing career started as the editor of “Field and Stream”, and later vice president of its publishing company from 1910 to 1918. During the Spanish-American War at Santiago, Cuba he served as an ensign and was a naval lieutenant in World War I. In 1921 to gather material for a series of novels and travel stories, he made a 15,000-mile trip to New Guinea, Java, Borneo, and Sumatra after he had signed a contract with Harper & Brother. He was the author of thirty-two books including numerous pulp fiction books but he also wrote books on camping, hunting, fishing, dogs, and boating. Even with his busy travel and writing schedule he is also remembered today as the designer, promotor, of the Forester tent.
