NOTES Eric Arthur Blair was born June 25, 1903 in Motihari, Bengal Presidency, British India. Blair would adopt the pen name George Orwell in 1932 for the publication of his first memoir "Down and Out in Paris and London", a name born of the patron saint of England and the river Orwell. Orwell himself was known for his role in the Spanish Civil War and as a staunch anti-Stalinist journalist and writer afterwards. He would become internationally known for his novella "Animal Farm" in 1945, a work which held a great deal of prescience for a post-war world. However, it would be his final novel "Nineteen Eighty-Four" which would solidify Orwell in public consciousness for decades after his death. "Nineteen Eighty-Four" was published in 1949 to widespread critical and commercial acclaim. Though generally well-received, many criticized the novel for it's unrealistically bleak setting and use as anti-communist propaganda. "1984" remains an immensely influential novel, being named in 2019 by the BBC as one of the 100 most influential novels of all time and receiving radio, audio, film, and television adaptations.
