Nowhere in the world did they teach the poster purposefully and systematically, as it was in the USSR. Rare Soviet posters today have to be searched for in different countries of the world. It's a paradox, but what was created in only a few copies and is known only to collectors is sometimes easier to find than what was produced in thousands of copies. Of the millions of campaign posters that have adorned the streets, classrooms, classrooms and hospital corridors for many decades, only a few have survived. THE PAINTER IS Alexander Lembersky was born in 1926 i n the small town of Belaya Tserkov near Kiev. His artistic ability was apparent from an early age. During World War ll, he was evacuated to Central Asia with his parents and younger sister and as a teenager he worked as a set designer for Moscow theaters. Lembersky graduated in 1947 from the Kiev Art School, where he later taught art. In 1955, he received degree in graphic and poster design from the Kiev Art Institute and the same year, based on his graduation work, he became a member of the Union of Artists of USSR. Although Lembersky began his work by designing theater and movie posters, he soon became more interested in social and cultural themes. Posters, with their powerful symbolism, proved to be the perfect medium for Lembersky. But his new form and ideas, which did not follow officially acceptable art form of “socialist realism” did not find any favor with the government. Only handful of his posters have been published in the former Soviet Union and most of them during the short period of “GLASSNOST”, when his “Homo Sapiens” series was awarded a silver medal on the international exhibition in Kiev in 1989. Lembersky was more successful outside the Soviet Union, where his posters gained acceptance, recognition and multiple awards. His work has been exhibited in Warsaw, Prague, Berlin, Munich, London, Tokyo, Jerusalem, Atlanta and New York. Alexander Lembersky in 1991 emigrated with his family to the United States and settled in Rochester, NY to have artistic freedom and realize many ideas which he was not able to pursue in the Soviet Union. Many of his posters rejected in the Soviet Union were exhibited at the Memorial Art Gallery, in Rochester NY. Additionally, Lembersky’s work is represented in permanent collections at the Kiev Movie Gallery, Auschwitz and US Universities, as well in many public and private collections. Ok all fairness to seller. Package was held up in foreign country so due to that...was reimbursed cost of item. I offered to send it back when I finally received it since it finally came....but only if seller provides shipping label, no cost me.
