Description

This game, for beginning readers , is adorable ! It is brand new and in excellent condition ! I did highlight the directions, in yellow marker, and write some notes in pencil. But, this game was never used, so I consider it new. This item is clean and comes from a smoke free home . This game is for ages 5-10 and is for 2-4 players . It was made by Learning Resources . The contents include the following.: game board, 4 cardboard recipe cards, 2 number dice, 60 colored transparent markers, 84 plastic-coated bug letter discs, 16 rubber critters, 1 sand minute timer, and 1 set of directions with "Quick Tips" and instructions for 2 levels of play . Game 1 is called, "Bug Bites". It is for beginning readers, ages 5+, and requires skills such as letter recognition, identification of words that start with specific letters, and vocabulary. In this game, players pick a bug letter disc, at each turn, and get to add it to their pot, if they correctly name a word beginning with the letter shown. The game ends when 1 player moves all of his/her critters into the correct soup pot area . The winner is the player with the most bug letter discs, in his/her soup pot, when the game ends . To set up, players choose which color critters they want to use. The critters are then lined up next to the start point for player's colors . The bug discs are scattered, letter-side-down, in the letter pool that is in the center of the board . For each turn, players roll only 1 die. They pick up 1 letter disc from the pool. Players turn it letter-side-up. If they correctly name a word, that starts with the letter shown, they add the bug disc to their soup pot. The player then moves the critter, of his/her choice, ahead the number of spaces equal to the number he/she rolled . The player jumps over spaces where another player's critter sits, without counting them . For added difficulty, there are variations to this play. Skilled players can make the game more challenging by adding new twists and turns. In one version, the number the player rolls is the number of bug letter discs he/she picks, from the pool, for each turn. If the player can name 1 word for each bug letter, he/she can add the discs to his/her pot. In another version, the timer is required. The number the player rolls is the number of bug letter discs he/she picks from the pool . The player has to name the same number of words for each letter . For example, if a player rolls a 3, he/she picks 3 bug letter discs and names 3 words for each letter shown . Players have 1 minute. When time runs out, players keep all bug letter discs they were able to name words for. Game 2 is called, " All-You-Can-Eat Bug Buffet". It is for ages 8+ . It requires skills such as reading, writing, spelling words that begin with specific letters, and vocabulary . Players earn points for the number of words they can spell during each turn. The game finishes when the first player's critter lands in his/her soup pot . The player with the most points, when the game finishes, wins . To set up, the timer and transparent markers are required. Each player chooses 1 critter, of a different color, and any recipe card. The player places his/her critter at the start point for his/her color . One bug disc is placed, letter-side-down, on each vowel circle, around the letter pool . The remaining discs are arranged, letter-side-down, in 4 piles, in the pool . Players need to remember to place new vowel discs on vowel circles after each turn. Each player is given 12 transparent circle chips, a pencil, and a piece of paper. Someone is picked to be the time keeper and the score keeper. For each turn, a player rolls the pair of dice. He/she moves ahead the number of spaces equal to the number rolled. The player jumps over spaces where another player's critter sits, without counting them . If a player lands on "Take Another Turn", he/she completes his/her first turn and rolls again. The number a player rolls is the number of bugs he/she gets to lift off the vowel circles around the pool . The player turns each bug letter-side-up and places it next to the vowel circle it was covering . All players place transparent markers on their recipe cards to cover the letters shown on the bug discs and vowel circles. The spell-off starts once the time keeper turns over the minute timer . All players participate. Players write as many words as they can using the letters marked on their recipe cards. Players can use letters more than once in any word. When time runs out, players take turns reading and spelling the words on their lists. Players get points based on the following rules.: Words appearing only on a player's list are worth 2 points. Words that also appear on someone else's list are worth 1 point. Words spelled incorrectly are worth 0 points. The points are added up for each round . When the game ends, 1 point is added to a player's total score for each bug disc he/she collected. Whoever has the most points is the winner. As a former educator, I purchased quite a few Learning Resources materials. They are very well made, are great for reinforcing skills, and children love them! I would highly recommend them to both teachers and parents! This item is rare and very hard to find in new condition ! I have only seen 1 other new game currently selling online! This game would make a wonderful addition to a kindergarten, 1st, 2nd, or 3rd grade classroom! It would also be great to have in a household with young children ! I am hoping to find it a good home.
