DESCRIPTION: Sixty tracks by various artists selected from the US charts of 1959. All of the songs were R&B and/or pop hits and many have become classics of the genre. The artists include such legends as Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley, Fats Domino, the Coasters, Ruth Brown, Lavern Baker, Nat King Cole, and Sarah Vaughan. The collection, including full details of the original label issues, is the second of an ongoing year-by-year series representing the Rhythm & Blues charts. The informative booklet notes are authored by respected Echoes/Record Collector journalist Mike Atherton. A parallel series, Soul Breakout, is being released simultaneously. The two series are intended to complement each other, with no duplication of tracks. This 1959 installment in the year-by-year R&B Spotlight series sees the increasing popularity of Rhythm & Blues, with many of the entries also crossing over to the pop charts. The R&B chart mixed successes from both one-hit wonders and fifties stars. R&B with the Rock and Roll beat was represented by Fats Domino, Chuck Berry, Lloyd Price, and Little Willie John. Harmony vocal group sounds abounded with notable sides from the Flamingos, the Skyliners, the Crests, the Five Satins, and Richard Barrett with the Chantels. Uptempo group items, often with a comedy slant, were very popular and the Coasters, the Clovers, the Cadillacs, the Accents, and the Genies are amongst the excellent selections here. The whole Twist craze had its beginnings in this year with the release of the original version written and recorded by Hank Ballard & The Midnighters. Ruth Brown, Lavern Baker, and Clyde McPhatter pointed the way for the future direction of R&B with their polished, New York-produced recordings. Bluesier items still appeared in the charts with winners from Jimmy Reed, Little Walter, and Lightnin’ Slim. Instrumental charters included catchy items from Dave ‘Baby’ Cortez, the Spacemen, and Paul Gayten. Tremendous tracks including classic songs like Kansas City , Sea Cruise , Charlie Brown , The Twist , Since I Don’t Have You , and Love Potion No. 9 , all included here; Little Willie John’s Leave My Kitten Alone , within two years time, would be added to the set list of a young Liverpool band going by the name of The Beatles, though it is Johnny Preston’s 1961 cover that is cited by Paul McCartney as the source for their version. If an unsealed jewel case is received by me broken, it will be replaced with a new jewel case before shipping; sealed CDs received with minor cracked/damaged jewel cases will be noted as such in the item’s description and will be shipped as is. NEW CD: This item is new and unplayed, but was received from a supplier without being shrink wrapped or cellophane wrapped; more common on imports but also many of the smaller independent US labels do not seal their CDs; some have it both ways (for which I have no prior knowledge of or choice when placing my orders). Other companies use resealable clear outer sleeves which are used on some import and domestic releases. If I receive an item this way it will be shipped as I received it and not opened up. Items received unwrapped are placed inside of a resealable clear outer mylar sleeve at the time they are received. GFC or GF: Gate fold cover, refers to a style of mini-jacket CDs. S/T: Self-Titled 2/1: This denotes that 2 albums are on 1 single CD. RE: Reissue. Variations from the original pressing will be noted when known. REMAST: Remastered. More specific sourcing will follow within the item’s description when available. OOP: Out Of Print. MIX: This sometimes appears in my title line and refers to a group's/artist's music having a mix of styles such a rock track with jazz then followed by a straight rock track followed by a psych rock track, etc., as opposed to a blues album with the album's tracks having predominantly one style. XT, XTKS, or #XTKS: Usually in lower case type as part of the title line, denotes bonus tracks on this release (extra track, extra tracks, or the number of extra tracks). ULC, LRC, etc.: Upper Left Corner, Lower Right Corner, etc. used in referencing the area of a defect or blemish to the jewel case or packaging.
