Vintage Book Wildwing Phoebe Erickson 1960 Horse Book. The book is in good condition for its age, there is some minimal staining and wear on the covers (see photos), there is some yellowing/staining along the tops the pages (see photos), there is one small tear on the side of one page that has been neatly taped with clear tape (see photos), and there is a nip at the bottom of a couple of pages (see photos). Otherwise, and the pages are in great condition with no marks or other tears or other damage. No dust jacket. Written and illustrated by the fabulous Phoebe Erickson. Published by Harper & Brothers in New York. Presented by Weekly Reader Children's Book Club. Copyright 1959 by Phoebe Erickson. Dedicated to the children of the Wind River Indian Reservation in Wyoming. 8" tall and 5.5" wide. Phoebe Erickson was an American author, illustrator, and painter born on November 23, 1907, in North Bay, Wisconsin. She was the twelfth of thirteen children born to Swedish immigrants to the United States. She is known for her accurate details of wildlife illustrations and loving depictions of animals and nature. She was a children's author and illustrator as well as a watercolor painter. Erickson attended the Chicago Art Institute and Columbia University. She first worked as a freelance illustrator for greeting card and playing card companies. Her first book, "Slip, the Story of a Little Fox", was published in 1948. She was then invited to illustrate the American edition of the sequel to Felix Salten's "Bambi". She regularly collaborated with Thornton Burgess, a prolific author of stories for children. In 1957, Erickson was awarded the William Allen White Children's Book Award. In 1960, she won the Dorothy Canfield Fisher Children's Book Award. In 1948, one of her watercolor illustrations was featured in the Whitney Museum of American Art's Annual Exhibition of Contemporary American Sculpture, Watercolors, and Drawings. Some of the other authors she illustrated books for include Anna Sewell, Ruth H. Dudley, Johanna DeWitt, Odille Ousley, Beatrix Potter, Caroline Kramer, and others. Some of the books written and illustrated by Phoebe Erickson include "Animals of Small Pond", "Baby Animal Friends", "Black Penny", "Cattail House", "Daniel 'Coon: The Story of a Pet Racoon", "Double or Nothing", "Just Follow Me", "Who's in the Mirror?", "Uncle DeBunkel", and others. Some of the books illustrated by Phoebe Erickson include "Baby Animal Stories", "Bambi's Children", "Black Beauty", "Little Peter Cottontail", "Nature Almanac", "Henny Penny", "Seashells", "The Littlest Reindeer", "The Uncle Wiggly Book", "We Are Neighbors", "The Ugly Duckling", "Down on the Farm Paper Dolls", "Stories Around the Year", "Read-Aloud Nursery Tales", "On Cherry Street", and others. Phoebe Erickson and her husband spent their retirement restoring old homes in Spain and Sweden. Phoebe Erickson died on August 23, 2006, in Concord, New Hampshire, at the age of 98.
